Almost many who are acquainted with the Pune food scenario are aware of Café de Custard in Kothrud which is popular for the variety of homely custards. It perhaps is the only dedicated Custard serving joint in India. After success of CDC, Pratik Langarkande and his wife Neha Kale-Langarkande decided to open a new venture that would serve more food options other than Custards. Aundh was the destination identified for the new eatery and even though situated at the bustling Season’s Road, The Blue Plate with its warm and cozy set up opened its doors for Puneites.
Food Prowl Team was invited for a food tasting at The Blue Plate.
The Blue Plate is akin to an all-day cafe that can be frequented between meals as well as have a complete lunch and/or dinner. It’s a great option for all the office goers in the vicinity. The menu focuses on Salads, Flat Breads, Baguette Sandwiches, and Pasta; and of course, Custards!
They have tried keeping the menu small but indigenous at same time. The Flat Breads are just too good and addictive. Fresh handmade bread that is so thin that it can double as Pizza base, yet unlike pizzas and these are not overloaded with Toppings.
Spice lovers can opt for the Peri Peri Chicken. BBQ Chicken is a milder option while hard core meat lovers settle for Classic Bacon. All these have juicy meat pieces in respective sauces, cooked nice hot and crisp.
Vegetarians also have number of options to choose from, Indian Spiced Cottage Cheese has tiny paneer chunks on cheese bed and flavored with local masalas, if you want Desi Chaat like flavors look no further.Tomato Corn Onion Flat Bread has European flavors with interesting contrasting textures and natural flavors from cheese and 3 veggies.
They have various Salads on the menu, Greek Salad and Caeser Salad follow the regular recipes.
The Waldorf Salad has apples and balsamic reduction giving it little sweetish flavor and addition of walnuts completes the dish with a good texture. Customization is also available by adding Eggs or Chicken to any of the salads by paying a little extra. If you are in mood for a fresh salad and a coffee this would be great to fill your tummy and energize your body.
Instead of having regular sandwiches they have opted for Baguettes, which is a welcome change. Fresh soft baguettes with enough fillings and lightly grilled, make a sandwich that feels much better than regular thinner bread.
Pan Fried Paneer Baguette, the paneer is soft and the generously used sauce is packed with flavors.
The BBQ Chicken Sausage Baguette, steamed sausages topped with onions and BBQ and Mustard sauce, much like a classic hot dog.
Last but not the least on the savory side of the menu are Pastas, one can opt for either Penne or Spaghetti, and choose from the 5 sauces – Alfredo, Pomodaro, Pink Sauce, Creamy Pesto, and Aglio Olio, all these are available in both Veg and Non-Veg.
If you are looking for less saucy and a spicy option Aglio Olio will be recommended as it has good amount of red chilli flakes and is generously drizzled with olive oil.
Pink Sauce and Pesto Pasta both have distinct tastes, very creamy and should be had with penne pasta.
While eating here always keep some space for the famous custards to finish the meal on a sweet note. There’s one for everyone, no matter what flavor preferences you have. Irish Coffee and Hazelnut for those who like mocha and chocolate flavors.
Trifle, Strawberry for fruit lovers and Crunchy and Custard with Brownie for those looking for textures and flavors.
And if you Mango freak, do not miss the Mango Devil while the season lasts, a whole mango split on top and bottom of the glass having thick Mango flavored custard in between, its divine and missing it will be a sin.
The Blue Plate lives up to its name and has certainly hit the bulls eye in terms of both food quality and reasonable pricing.
