Restaurant Name: Keg & Barrel
Location: Shop No. 29, Madhuvrindavan Society, Dyaneshwar Paduka Chowk, F.C. Road, Pune, Maharashtra 411005
Located within the by lanes between F.C. Road and J.M. Road, Keg & Barrel is a much-needed pocket friendly watering hole with economical bar options. It’s a good place to hangout for a couple of drinks with friends over some decent options in the food menu as well.
Zen Chinese shared the same premises and since they shut down, Keg & Barrel is expanding further. They have also considered the patrons of Zen and will have a section in menu that will continue the Zen’s famous dishes.
Food Prowl Team was invited for a food tasting by Keg and Barrel for their Sunday Brunch which is priced at Rs. 550 plus taxes.
The Sunday Brunch includes 4 starters and 4 mains – 2 each for Veg and Non-Veg, 2 live counters for Chaat and Pasta; Biryani, Dessert and 1 DraughtBeer or Mocktail/Beverage. The food options are good enough for a satisfying meal. They had a Live Band playing nice old Hindi songs that kept everyone entertained for the afternoon.
The Brunch started with Non Veg Starters – Lasooni Murg Tikki which was absolutely soft and succulent and in a medium spicy marination. It was excellent.
Lamb Shami Kebab was not prepared in the typical style but was good taste wise. They still need to improve a bit on it and the Chef duly noted our feedback.
Chilli Garlic Paneer and Tandoori Aloo were the Vegetarian Starters served. Both were well done.
They also have a LIVE counter for Chaat and Pasta.
The Main Course consisted of Veg Biryani, Steamed Rice, Dal, Veg Handi and Murg Handi Lazeez.
Briyani served to us was also very nice in flavors, had enough Birista (fried onions) that lent it a very good texture, served with Raita.
Gajar ka Halwa served for dessert was just heavenly, just like you’ll get at best places across Punjab.
We also tried few things from the regular menu apart from the dishes that were served as a part of the food tasting. Lamb Chops cooked in Kala Masala were the best of all and it’s one of the dishes they expertise in. Lamb was so well cooked that with a little nudge we had the bone in our hand completely separated from the meat. The flavors were very close to the Kala Mutton you will get in and around Kolhapur.
We were served a couple of Mocktails but Mango Blast was perfect for the weather. Not very milky and loaded with ice yet not watery.
Keg & Barrel opened in September 2016 and has a strong base of regular customers. The co-owner – Meghaa Nair also runs the canteen at Hridyanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Symbiosis in Pune and Hyderabad Campus. Meghaa was present at the food tasting and gave us a background of the restaurant and took us through the details of each dish served.
Keg & Barrel has an Outdoor section as well as an Indoor Section with a big screen to watch your favorite sport while you sip your drink and gorge on the food. They also have valet parking available.
